Luca Guadagnino’s ‘Challengers‘ has topped the worldwide box office in its opening weekend.

‘Challengers’ makes its debut with an estimated $15.01M domestically on the opening weekend across 3,477 locations. Internationally, the film earned $10.0M, with notable debuts of $1.8M in the U.K. and $1.5M in Italy. The worldwide total now stands at $25.0M.

The weekend box office top 7 for April 26th – April 28th, 2024, saw ‘Challengers‘ leading with $15.01M, ‘Unsung Hero‘ following at $7.75M, ‘Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire‘ at $7.20M, ‘Civil War‘ at $7.00M, ‘Abigail‘ at $5.25M, ‘The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare‘ at $3.86M, and ‘Kung Fu Panda 4‘ at $3.55M.

‘Challengers’ received an 88% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes, 7.8/10 on IMDb, 88% on Metacritic, and a B+ CinemaScore.

Directed by Guadagnino from a screenplay by Justin Kuritzkes. The film stars Zendaya, Mike Faist, Josh O’Connor, Scottie DiGiacomo, Faith Fay, Cornel Bradford, Jake Jensen, Keanu Ham, Christine Dye, A.J. Lister, Carlyne Fournier, Joe Curtin, Emelia Camille Harewood, Sid Jarvis, Charles Massey, Sam Xu, Connor Murray, and Cameen M Copeland.

The plot follows, “Tashi, a former tennis player turned coach, has transformed her husband from a mediocre player into a world-famous grand slam champion. To jolt him out of his recent losing streak, she makes him play a challenger event — close to the lowest level of the tournament on the pro tour. Tensions soon run high when he finds himself standing across the net from the once-promising, now burnt-out Patrick, his former best friend, and Tashi’s former boyfriend.”
