“Hit & Run” is not coming back for a second season after Netflix decided to scrap the geopolitical espionage thriller despite its debut season’s cliffhanger ending.
The streaming giant has reportedly opted to not renew the series co-created, executive produced and headlined by “Fauda’s” Lior Raz, according to Deadline.
The show premiered on the platform in early August after suffering delays due to the COVID-19-related industry shutdowns, with sources telling the entertainment news outlet that “Hit & Run” took three years to produce.
The nine-episode first season actually landed on Netflix’s top 10 list upon its debut on the platform. It also managed to secure a spot among Nielsen’s top 10 original streaming shows for three weeks since its premiere, as per The Hollywood Reporter.
The show was also well received by critics and viewers as it secured over 70% ratings from official reviews and audience feedback. However, Netflix had big hopes for the drama as it was very expensive to produce.
Showrunners Dawn Prestwich and Nicole Yorkin told THR that Netflix wanted the series to be a massive hit since it was a big-budget collaboration with Raz and co-creator Avi Issacharoff.
“They want it to be an international hit and not just a hit in Israel or a hit in the U.S. One episode of our show is the equivalent of two full seasons of ‘Fauda’ in terms of how much it cost,” the showrunners said.
Prestwich and Yorkin also admitted to the outlet that while awaiting the renewal, they chose to come up with an open-ended scene in the finale as they were hopeful that it would be picked up for Season 2.
The showrunners said in interviews that they planned the show, which was filmed in New York and Israel, to run for at least two or three seasons, but that is not happening anymore.
“Hit & Run” follows the story of Raz’s character Segev, who is investigating the death of his wife Danielle (Kaelen Ohm) following a hit-and-run accident in Tel Aviv. In search of his wife’s killers, he is led to the U.S. where he discovers some disturbing truths about his spouse and the secrets she intentionally kept from him.
