Nebraska fans make it clear they want Urban Meyer as next head coach

The Big Red faithful wants Urban Meyer in Lincoln.

Nebraska fired Scott Frost earlier this week after a disappointing 1-2 start. It is supremely rare for a college football coach to get fired in September, and immediately speculation turned to the idea that Nebraska was plotting to go after a big name like Urban Meyer.

Lo and behold, Meyer was slated to be in Lincoln this week for Fox Sports’ “Big Noon Kickoff” as Nebraska hosts Oklahoma on Fox.

There were even the obligatory message board rumors that Meyer was meeting with Nebraska athletics director Trev Alberts.

At the beginning of “Big Noon Kickoff,” Nebraska fans made their preference for their next football coach known, chanting “We want Urban!” Meyer grinned at the moment, but did not address the idea that this would be a job he would consider.

Meyer had a disastrous season with the Jacksonville Jaguars last year, getting fired before the end of the season amid a 2-11 record. He was accused of kicking former Jags kicker Josh Lambo during practice (an allegation Meyer said was greatly exaggerated), and was spotted canoodling with a blonde who is not his wife in an Ohio bar after he did not fly back to Jacksonville with the team following a loss on “Thursday Night Football.”

Nonetheless, Meyer is one of the greatest college football coaches of all-time. He won national championships at Ohio State and Florida.

It wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say controversy swirled around Meyer’s programs, but Nebraska has been so starved for success with their football program that it’s not particularly difficult to see why they would still want the 58-year-old leading their team.
