Michigan’s Jim Harbaugh sorry for failed Glenn Schembechler hire

Jim Harbaugh took responsibility for the hire of a legendary coach’s son following a major social media controversy.

Michigan had hired Glenn “Shemy” Schembechler — the son of longtime head Bo Schembechler — as assistant director of football recruiting but he stepped down three days later after it was discovered his personal Twitter account was filled with “likes” of racist content.

There were several posts that suggested slavery and Jim Crow were a positive to strengthen black individuals and families.

According to an MLive report on Thursday, Harbaugh slammed the content that caused “concern” and reiterated that the school took quick action to part ways with Schembechler.

“Once I became aware of things that were offensive — offensive to me, offensive to other members of our team — [we acted],” Harbaugh said. “We didn’t want that mindset around.”

Michigan has dropped the third-party human resources group that vetted and cleared Schembechler, Harbaugh said, adding that the school needs to do better in the future to make sure it has suitable candidates.

“I read the report myself,” Harbaugh said. “We have a company that vets that — social media — and they came back and [cleared him]. We’ve got a new company doing that [now], but they’ve got to be better.

“I’ll take responsibility for that. If somebody can find that in a day, then we have to be better ourselves.”

Bo Schembechler coached Michigan from 1969-89, leading the Wolverines to 13 Big Ten titles.

He retired as the program’s all-time wins leader.

The younger Schembechler was a longtime NFL scout and worked most recently with the Raiders.
