LA Bowl named after Jimmy Kimmel: ‘This is not a joke’

Two college football teams will soon play in a game named after Jimmy Kimmel.

Yes, you read that right.

The inaugural LA Bowl is now officially the Jimmy Kimmel LA Bowl, the late-night talk show host announced Wednesday night on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” The game is scheduled for December 18 at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles and will feature the Mountain West’s No. 1 selection and the PAC-12’s No. 5 selection.

“Ever since I was 52, which was last year, I’ve dreamed of having a college football bowl game named after me,” Kimmel said. “… This is history-making. Never before has a bowl game been named after a human being.

“This is not a joke. This is a real bowl game, named after me. So mark your calendars for Saturday December 18. The Jimmy Kimmel LA Bowl here on ABC. It’s like an early Christmas gift.”

The LA Bowl was originally slated to launch last December, but was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The bowl game has additionally partnered with a number of organizations from the local LA community, including One For All, Boys and Girls Club L.A. Harbor and Boys and Girls Club L.A. Metro.

“Stan Kroenke designed Hollywood Park to be a sports and entertainment destination for Angelenos and visitors from across the world to enjoy,” Jason Gannon, the bowl’s executive director, said Wednesday. “We cannot think of a better way to bring sports and entertainment together than by collaborating with celebrated late-night host and comedian Jimmy Kimmel on our collegiate bowl game. Jimmy Kimmel LA Bowl will not only bring an incredible game day experience to fans, but it will also focus on supporting our community 365 days a year.”
