Jets’ Elijah Moore looking to build on strong rookie season

Elijah Moore is ready for his encore.

The Jets wide receiver had a promising rookie season and now wants to build on that in Year 2.

“I feel like I’ve got so much to accomplish,” Moore said Wednesday at the conclusion of minicamp. “I just feel like I need to understand the offense, in and out. When you understand the offense, you’re going to ball. Get on the same page as Zach [Wilson], score a lot of touchdowns.”

Moore emerged at midseason last year before a quad injury ended his season in December. He had 43 catches for 538 yards and five touchdowns in 11 games. Moore admitted the injury that sent him to injured reserve late in the year was tough to deal with.

“I was down at first. It really was getting to me, to be honest,” Moore said. “Obstacles come. I’m a person who strives myself off not what I did. It’s about what I’m going to do. I know what I can do. … Just put your head down and grind. That’s for anybody who’s moving forward and is going through obstacles.”

Moore said he has already felt a difference this spring in his second season.

“I feel like I’m understanding what I’m doing better,” Moore said. “Going into Year 2, I just feel like it’s going to be a more smooth transition as far as my assignment.”

Head coach Robert Saleh said he feels good about where the team is at as the spring program concludes and the Jets take a break before training camp opens in late July.

“Obviously I’m an optimist,” Saleh said. “I think we’re in a really, really good place. I really do. What it looks like from a results standpoint that’s for all y’all to judge. But we’re a lot further along this year than we were a year ago.”

The Jets went with a scaled down version of organized team activities and minicamp practices, hoping to keep the team healthier than it was last year. Saleh said they will make changes to the training camp schedule, too.

“Training camp is also going to be modified some,” Saleh said. “Obviously, we’re not modifying the contact and all that stuff. That’s gotta happen. But just the amount of days we’re grinding consecutively is going to be modified.”

Offensive line coach John Benton spoke to reporters for the first time since his March arrest for driving under the influence. Benton said he was unable to comment on the arrest. Benton said he has not heard from the NFL on any discipline.

“It’s still pending, so I really can’t speak to it,” Benton said. “ I’m happy to do anything with the Jets, but until that thing’s settled, I can’t.”
