Jessica Chastain says a lot of kids have been named after her ‘Interstellar’ character — but a baby-naming site disagrees

Maybe they’re not gravitating to it after all.

In a new interview, Jessica Chastain claimed there have been “a lot of couples who have told me they’ve named their children, their daughters Murph,” after her NASA scientist character, Murphy “Murph” Cooper, in the 2014 science fiction film “Interstellar.”

“Well, maybe this means it’ll be a boon to science,'” Chastain, 47, quipped to People magazine last week.

But a rep for Babynames.com told TMZ on Wednesday that the name Murph is not that popular.

It’s not in the top 1,000 names — for boys or girls — for any year of birth this century, according to the Social Security Administration’s baby name database.

The Babynames.com rep also told TMZ that only one person added the name to their favorites list in the two years after the release of “Interstellar” — and another person added it last year.

The Post reached out to Chastain’s reps for comment.

Now, Murphy is a desired name for babies, entering the Social Security list in 2020 at No. 977 for girls and No. 964 for boys.

There were 443 female babies and 266 male babies born in 2022 named Murphy, according to the SSA.

According to the Bump, Murphy is a gender-neutral name of Gaelic origin that means “warrior of the sea.”

The Bump says the name has been popularized by Oscar winner Cillian Murphy, 47, and Golden Globe winner Eddie Murphy, 63, and it can be a nod to Murphy’s Law: “Anything that can go wrong will go wrong, and at the worst possible time.”

Also, don’t forget about Murphy Brown.

Four years ago on Reddit, a parent wondered if Murphy or Murph as a boy’s name is “as cool as I think it is in my head”?

“I like Murphy much better,” one commenter confessed. “Murph feels like too much of a nickname and also reminds me of the sound I make before I vomit.”

“Definitely not Murph — sounds unfinished to me or like ‘smurf,'” another declared.

“Murph also made me think of retching before I read the other comment about it. It’s not an attractive name,” a third proclaimed.
