Giants sign Tanner Hudson for badly needed tight end depth

The Giants’ tight spot at tight end got a little looser Thursday with the signing of Tanner Hudson.

After releasing Jordan Akins on Wednesday and losing Ricky Seals-Jones and rookie Andre Miller to a season-ending injuries earlier in training camp, the Giants were left with just rookies Daniel Bellinger and Austin Allen.

Hudson, 27, was part of a tryout for Giants coaches and executives Wednesday morning. He has five catches for 67 yards in 22 career games with the Buccaneers (where he won a Super Bowl ring) and 49ers.

It was a surprise that Akins never moved off the third-string depth chart despite 114 career catches over four seasons, combined with the Giants’ shallow depth and his reunion with position coach Andy Bischoff.

The Giants are hosting a joint practice Thursday with the Jets, who have several tight ends on the roster bubble (Trevon Wesco, Kenny Yeboah and Lawrence Cager) that could be auditioning for jobs after cut day.

The Giants waived offensive lineman Chris Owens, who was just added last week, to make room for Hudson.
