Former Jets RB Frank Gore training for boxing career

Running back Frank Gore may not be officially retired from football, but the former Jet is eyeing a career in a new sport.

Gore, 38, told NFL.com that he has been training to become a boxer — and there could be a high-profile fight in the works. While he’s received calls from NFL teams in need of running backs, the five-time Pro Bowler has declined and hasn’t made up his mind on if he wants to continue to play.

“I’ve been training for both — football and boxing,” said Gore, who started 14 games for Gang Green last season. “I’ve always loved boxing, so that’s what I’ve been doing. And we’re trying to make a fight happen. If we do that, you’ll see me in the ring.”

The NFL’s third-leading rusher of all-time is apparently still open to a return to the NFL, but Gore’s focus has clearly been on getting in the ring. Boxing has recently seen a surge in fights featuring retired athletes, celebrities and “retired” fighters, drawing a heap of viewers.

“I just fell in love with how hard it is,” Gore said. “I felt like, ‘Man, I couldn’t fight.’ And I always like a challenge. So I kept doing it and doing it and I saw myself getting better and better.”

Gore, who spent 10 of his 16 years in the NFL with the 49ers, carried 187 times for 653 yards with two scores last season for the Jets. He has also had stints with the Colts, Dolphins and Bills from 2015-2019.
