Over 80 million Americans are under winter weather alerts Sunday afternoon as a storm is pummeling regions from Mississippi to Maine.
“Heavy snow and ice accumulations are likely to produce hazardous travel, downed trees, and power outages. Heaviest snow is expected along and just west of the Appalachians, and the most damaging icing is likely across parts of North Carolina. Thunderstorms may produce damaging winds and tornadoes in Florida and the eastern Carolinas. Strong winds and coastal flooding are also expected,” the National Weather Service said.
Winter weather alerts will affect people across 1,400 miles east of the Mississippi River.
Strong winds may exceed 40 mph causing worries of severe damage. Some areas are already experiencing power outages.
Around 200,000 people were reported to be without power in the southeast as of Sunday morning, with about 100,000 in Georgia and more than 40,000 in each of Florida and South Carolina, according to the website PowerOutage.
The Storm Prediction Center expects parts of Northeast Georgia throughout the Western Carolinas, and far Eastern Tennessee, to get snowfall at a rate of one inch per hour overnight into Monday. Along with areas around the Appalachians and across the lower Great Lakes.
