Former Georgia football player Ahkil Nasir Crumpton has been sentenced to 30 years in prison after he was convicted of multiple charges related to the shooting death of a gas station clerk.

In announcing Crumpton’s sentencing, the Justice Department said that court documents and evidence presented at the trial indicated that Crumpton approached store clerk Elijah Wood at 1:15 a.m. on March 19, 2021 at a RaceTrac gas station in Watkinsville, Georgia and “pointed a Glock 19 pistol with a weapon mounted light at Wood, firing one round at close range towards Wood, striking him in the chest.”

Wood, who was on a FaceTime call with his girlfriend at the time, died at the scene as Crumpton fled without taking any money from the cash register or items from the store.

Later that year, Crumpton, now 26, was involved in a confrontation with a man named Anthony Jones in Philadelphia, in which Crumpton shot and killed Jones.

Crumpton shot and killed Jones after Jones allegedly robbed Crumpton of his car keys and a second firearm.

The ballistics tests from the Glock 19 pistol used by Crumpton in the Philadelphia shooting revealed that the same gun was used to kill Wood in Georgia.

Crumpton was arrested by FTI and ATF agents in his native Philadelphia last March on a murder warrant stemming from the shooting in Georgia.

The Justice Department said that Crumpton jumped out of his bedroom window, but was ultimately apprehended by FBI SWAT amid a chase.

The feds found the Glock 19 that ballistics tests revealed was used in both fatal shootings inside a backpack in Crumpton’s bedroom, and also discovered clothing that he wore during both incidents.

Crumpton’s teammate, Juwan Taylor, testified at the trial that Crumpton had confessed to the shooting at the gas station, saying, “I didn’t mean to do it – I just wanted the money, I just shot him at the store, at the store,” and that the gun “just went off.”

Crumpton played wide receiver for Georgia during the 2017 and 2018 seasons.

Crumpton’s sentences boiled down to 20 years in prison for interference with commerce by attempted robbery and an additional 10 years for false statement during the purchase of a firearm.

On the latter charge, co-defendant James North Armstrong admitted to purchasing the Glock 19 for Crumpton and faces up to 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine after pleading guilty last October to one count of false statement during the purchase of a firearm.
