Daniel Jones surprisingly practices amid neck injury confusion

Daniel Jones took the field for practice and his head coach, Joe Judge, called it “really a normal Wednesday for him.’’

Judge went on to say he expects Jones to practice Thursday and Friday.

So, what happened to the strained neck, the injury to befall Jones four days earlier in the 13-7 victory over the Eagles?

Does this mean Jones will be able to start at quarterback Sunday against the Dolphins?

“We’re not going to rule anything out right now,’’ Judge said. “Daniel will be out here for practice with us today, we expect him to practice tomorrow and Friday. We’ll see what he can do. We’ll see how it goes.’’

Judge said Jones will be “working with our medical staff throughout the day.’’

Reports that Jones will miss the game and backup Mike Glennon will start in Miami might be premature.

On the second play of the game against the Eagles, Jones took off around the left side, gained five yards, went into a late and clumsy slide and was nailed by safety Rodney McLeod, who made contact with Jones’ helmet. Linebacker Alex Singleton arrived a split-second later to administer a body blow. Jones got to his feet and actually motioned that he thought a penalty should have been called, presumably on McLeod’s shot.

Jones did not miss a snap. Judge said there were no indications Jones’ neck was bothering him. The first time he found out about the injury, Judge said, was in the post-game injury report he received from the medical staff.

In his three years, Jones has yet to stay healthy for a full season, which is unsurprising, given how often he runs with the ball and his penchant for taking hits rather than avoiding contact. A sprained ankle knocked him out of two games as a rookie in 2019. He missed two starts in 2020 with hamstring and ankle issues. In year No. 3, he already missed most of one game and now likely more than that.. Every injury was the after-effects of Jones running and either extending for additional yards or running and getting hit.

Glennon is 6-21 in his career as a starter. He made five starts (all losses) in 2020 for the Jaguars, who went 1-15.

In his only action this season, Glennon replaced Jones late in the second quarter of the Week 5 loss in Dallas, after Jones slammed his head on the turf and left with a concussion. Glennon completed 16 of 25 passes for 196 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions to close out the game.

Jones was able to clear concussion protocols and start the next game, a blowout loss to the Rams in which he threw three interceptions and looked dreadful.

“We always prepare all of our players,’’ Judge said of Glennon. “Every week, Mike’s job is to be prepared and if his number is called at any point in time either before or during the game he’s ready to go when we run our offense.

“We’ll also prepare Daniel to start as well.’’
