Bryson DeChambeau wasn’t used by captain Steve Stricker in the Ryder Cup’s morning foursome lineup, but opened up the afternoon four-ball pairings with a tee shot that sailed left and nailed a spectator’s ankle.
DeChambeau, the PGA Tour’s leader in driving distance and a participant in next week’s Professional Long Drivers Association World Championships, was named to Team USA for his second Ryder Cup appearance despite going 0-3 during the 2018 edition. He lost both foursomes and his one singles match. Golf Digest ranked DeChambeau No. 18 of the 24 golfers participating in the event at Whistling Straits this weekend.
He’s also attracted additional attention recently for his controversy with Brooks Koepka and a 48-day print media boycott that he ended on Tuesday. “This is a team event,” DeChambeau said on Sept. 21. “I’m focused on helping Team USA to a victory, and that’s honestly the reason why I’m here.”
