Brisbane Test: India Breach Australia’s Fortress, Win Maiden Test At The Gabba

India created history as they became the first team to defeat Australia at their fortress of Brisbane in 32 years, and with the three-wicket win in the fourth and final cricket Test at the Gabba on Tuesday, the Indian team clinched the series 2-1.

Australia last loss a Test at the Gabba in 1988 against the then-mighty West Indies. Chasing Australia’s target of 328 in the Gabba Test, India rode on brilliant knocks from Shubman Gill (91), Rishabh Pant (89 not out) and Cheteshwar Pujara (56). Team India resumed on their overnight score of 4 for no loss Tuesday on the final day of the series, but suffered an early setback as they lost Rohit Sharma for only seven runs.

However, the next few partnerships ensured Team India would etch yet another for the history books in the land Down Under. Pujara and Gill put up 114 runs for the second wicket, Pujara and Pant put up 61 runs for the fourth wicket before Pant and Washington Sundar built the crucial 53-run stand towards the end of the innings to help India cross the line with a couple of overs to spare.

For scoring 23 off 29 in the first innings and a match-winning knock of 89 not out off 138 balls in the final innings, India’s wicketkeeper-batsman Pant received the Player of the Match award.

"This one of my biggest days in life. The support the team has given me even when I was not playing has been incredible. It's a dream come true. We've been practicing hard since the first Test. The team management always backs me and tells me you are a match-winner and you have to go out there and win and I am happy I did it today. It was a fifth-day pitch and the ball was turning," Pant said at the post-match presentation.

India have retained the Border-Gavaskar Trophy after winning it for the first time on their previous tour in 2018-19.
