The Mets are getting their Top Guns back, no Tom Cruise or Miles Teller needed.

Max Scherzer will make his return Tuesday when the Mets take on the Reds in Cincinnati. Jacob deGrom still has a few weeks, but steps have been made: he made his first rehab start on Sunday night in Port St. Lucie and struck out five of the six batter he faced, throwing over 100 MPH like a walk in the park.

If Scherzer and deGrom are back in Queens together down the stretch, Mets opponents are likely to lose some sleep.

To talk about the return of the aces, Eduardo Escobar’s 4th of July weekend home run party and everything else going on in Mets-land, we bring you a new episode of the “Amazin’ But True” podcast with Nelson Figueroa and I. The Post’s Jon Heyman joins the program for the first time.

‘Amazin’ But True’ Podcast Opening Segment with Jake & Figgie:

  • ESCOBAR/SERIES WIN: Eduardo Escobar hit a home run in all three games over the weekend. He’s a fun dude and a good clubhouse guy. Good for him for helping the Mets win two of three against the Rangers. Carlos Carrasco needed that rebound outing after getting rocked twice by the Astros.
  • MAD MAX RETURNS: Scherzer will make his return to the Mets on Tuesday in Cincinnati. It was a nice gesture for him to treat the entire Rumble Ponies team to a fancy dinner after his final rehab outing.
  • JACOB DEGROM REHAB: deGrom casually throwing 100-101 miles per hour in his first rehab outing Sunday in Port St. Lucie. He’s inching closer to a return to the Mets. He probably will throw two or three more rehab outings before we see him back with the team after the All-Star break.
  • ALVAREZ PROMOTION: Francisco Alvarez is one step closer to coming up to the big leagues. He will debut this week for Triple-A Syracuse. There is a good chance we see him in September as a backup catcher and designated hitter. The Mets could use a boost in the lineup down the stretch.
  • BP DEBACLE: We recap my nightmare batting practice against Figgie on Staten Island before Wednesday’s Ferryhawks-Ducks game. I could not hit a ball further than a few slow rollers to the infield. The Home Run Crunch outfit and gold shoes did not do much — I was rusty out there.

Jon Heyman Interview:
NY Post MLB Insider

  • METS SEASON: Mets are the scariest team in the NL with deGrom and Scherzer healthy. They have done a great job staying in first place without them.
  • DEGROM’S FUTURE: Good chance deGrom opts out. There is a decent chance he goes to Braves or elsewhere. It will depend on the contract.
  • TRADE DEADLINE: Mets will definitely be in the market for a reliever, especially a left-handed pitcher. They also should be in talks for another hitter, whether it’s Josh Bell, Trey Mancini or Andrew Benintendi.
  • ALVAREZ: He is definitely a strong possibility for a September promotion and chance to bolster the Mets lineup.
