The Philadelphia 76ers have been unsuccessful in their attempts to trade Ben Simmons, but that doesn’t necessarily mean the 25-year-old will start the 2021-2022 NBA season with his current team. Simmons plans to never suit up for the 76ers again, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.
Parts of Simmons’ exit strategy includes skipping training camp, Wojnarowski reports. NBA training camps begin Sept. 28, and Philadelphia plays its first preseason game on Oct. 4. The 76ers start the regular season on Oct. 20 against the New Orleans Pelicans.
Simmons is clearly aware of sanctions available to organization to fine and suspend him, including withholding of salary. Simmons reportedly hasn’t spoken with the 76ers since he informed the front office of his decision in August.
When Philadelphia was eliminated by the Atlanta Hawks in the conference semifinals, it became clear that the clock was ticking on Simmons’ time with the 76ers. Simmons disappeared on offense in the most important moments, attempting just three fourth-quarter shots in a seven-game series against the Hawks.
A trade involving Simmons has not materialized because of Philadelphia’s asking price. The 76ers have been seeking several first-round draft picks and an impact player in exchange for the three-time All-Star.

Simmons has been an All-Defensive First Team selection in each of the last two years. The former No. 1 overall draft pick averaged 14.3 points, 7.2 rebounds, and 6.9 assists per game in the 2020-2021 season.
Philadelphia earned the top seed in the Eastern Conference.
Simmons has four years and $147 million left on his contract. The 76ers can issue fines to Simmons for refusing to report to the team.
