Mets’ James McCann out for six weeks with fractured bone in wrist

James McCann thought his sore left wrist was not a big deal, but an X-ray on Friday said otherwise.

McCann has a fractured hamate bone and will undergo surgery, the Mets announced Friday. The typical timeline for recovery is typically six weeks, according to the team.

Tomas Nido started Friday’s game against the Mariners and Patrick Mazeika was called up from Triple-A Syracuse to serve as his backup.

McCann, who was batting .196 with a .551 OPS, had been held out of the lineup each of the last two games because of the wrist soreness. He said Thursday it was normal wear and tear and expected to bounce back by Friday.

Instead, the Mets will lean on Nido, another defense-first catcher who entered Friday batting .204 with a .445 OPS.
