Liberty acquire Natasha Cloud from Sun in latest boost to WNBA championship repeat hopes

The Liberty added some help for their quest to repeat as WNBA champions in 2025.

Veteran guard Natasha Cloud was traded to the Liberty on Sunday night in a deal with the Connecticut Sun that sent the No. 7 overall pick in this year’s draft and a future first-rounder in 2026 the other way.

Cloud is entering her 10th season in the WNBA and had spent last season with the Phoenix Mercury before she was traded this offseason to the Sun as part of the Alyssa Thomas blockbuster trade – a deal that shocked and upset the WNBA vet.

Cloud requested a trade out of Connecticut after she was shipped East in the four-team deal in February, according to The Athletic.

The Post’s Madeline Kenney reported in February that the Liberty reached out to the Sun about a trade for Cloud, but Connecticut initially declined.

The guard seemed to be happy with the destination she’s headed to now, expressing plenty of excitement in a video posted online.

“Liberty fans I’m so excited to be a part of this organization,” Cloud said. “Ya’ll have always shown me love since Day 1. I’ve always appreciated that and now more than ever I can’t wait to be a part of it. Ya’ll [are] hands down one of the fiercest fanbases. I can’t wait to play for ya’ll every single night. You know what you’re getting in me. You getting a dog. I’m gonna give you everything I got every single night.

“I know what it means to wear Liberty across my chest. I know ya’ll needed a dog added to the roster.”

The Liberty pick up someone who likely will be their starting point guard after losing Courtney Vandersloot via free agency.

Cloud brings a strong playmaking and perimeter defensive ability to Barclays Center.

“We could not be more excited to welcome Natasha Cloud to the New York Liberty family,” Liberty general manager Jonathan Kolb said in a statement. “Tash is someone who we identified years ago as a prime fit for our team and embodies everything we look for in a player.”

He added: “She has always left a lasting impression on the Barclays Center crowd, and we look forward to seeing the best fans in the WNBA embrace her on a nightly basis. Tash will undoubtedly strengthen our roster on both sides of the ball as we pursue another title in 2025.”

Cloud averaged 11.5 points per game in 2024 while recording 6.9 assists.
