LeBron James’ ironic Aaron Rodgers worry gets thrown back at him on broadcast

LeBron James has questions for the Packers’ front office — and his co-hosts had questions for him.

During Amazon Prime Video’s alternate broadcast of “Thursday Night Football,” which featured James and members of Uninterrupted’s “The Shop,” James questioned why the Packers won’t build a roster to maximize quarterback Aaron Rodgers’ talent.

“If you have a transcendent franchise player like Aaron Rodgers… why won’t you surround that when you got the picks to maximize what you can do?” James asked.

If only there was another superstar player in another sport that is still near the top of his game as his career comes to a close.

“Are we still talking football or are we talking basketball?” Paul Rivera, the show’s co-creator, asked, seemingly referring to James’ situation with the Lakers.

“I’m talking football,” James said. “I mean it definitely translates, but I don’t want to talk about me.”

Rodgers’ frustration with the Packers and the way the the team has built around him hit a boiling point in the 2021 offseason when he pushed for a trade. The reigning two-time MVP wasn’t happy with the organization for not including him on personnel decisions.

In the 2020 NFL Draft, the Packers drafted Rodgers’ heir apparent, quarterback Jordan Love, in the first round.

The two sides eventually came to an agreement to keep him in Green Bay. Rodgers, who was contemplating retirement, eventually agreed to a three-year, $150.8M extension this past March. The team then traded top receiver Davante Adams to the Raiders.

As for James? The Lakers are off to a troubling 3-10 start heading into a home game against the Pistons on Friday. The team’s current roster makeup has raised questions, even by James, who called out the Lakers’ lack of shooting last month.

James’ comments on “TNF” could have been a cryptic hint to the Lakers’ front office about their 2027 and 2029 first round picks that they have reportedly refused to give up in potential trade situations in the offseason.

The 37-year-old James re-signed with the Lakers on a two-year, $97.1 million contract extension in August. He has a player option for 2024-25.

The alternate broadcast of “The Shop” also included co-host Maverick Carter, Rams cornerback Jalen Ramsey, free agent receiver Dez Bryant, and actors Jamie Foxx and Rob Lowe.
