Gemini season is in full swing; sending novel length texts, faking expert status, reading their own reviews, spilling tea and talking s–t.
In a nod to the messy, mutable glory of the third sign in the zodiac, we are taking a look at the birth chart of one of their own, part time pirate and litigious lightning rod, ladies and gentlemen, Johnny Depp.
Born June 9, 1963 Depp is a divisive Gemini sun with a grind or die Cap moon and a child star Leo ascendant.
Depp’s Gemini sun makes him adaptable, affable and shifty AF. Ruled by Mercury, Gemini never shies away from controversy or conversation. Depp’s moon is in the strategic pimp heart of Capricorn, an earth sign that rules the skeletal system and the teeth. The moon represents our emotional interiority and perhaps the line can be drawn between Depp’s recent troubles, deep feelings of woe and his notably imperfect smile.
A Leo rising like Depp is kissed by the sun god; meant to be seen and celebrated and to play a part in some public capacity, be it a teacher in a classroom, an actor on a stage, a politician at a podium, a poet in the gutter or any combination of the above.

The Diabolical Degree

In astrology, specifically degree theory, the eighteenth degree of any sign is considered malefic. The domain of Mercury and Virgo it indicates bad luck, accidents, health issues, abuse, drama, loss, victimhood and compromised karma.
Depp’s sun, representing his ego and life force is in eighteen degrees of Gemini and shines with hunched shoulders in his eleventh house of community and friends. Apropos of this Depp is no stranger to loss, despair and betrayal relative to his community.
He has outlived contemporaries like River Phoenix as well as his adopted father figures like Hunter S. Thompson and Marlon Brando.
His childhood was marked by instability and physical abuse at the hands of his mother and as an adult he has accused his ex-wife of domestic violence and his siblings, various lawyers and management company of financial exploitation.
Venus in Taurus

Venus, named for the scallop shell dwelling goddess of love, is the planet of attraction, assets and aesthetics.
Depp’s Venus is in the indulgence as medicine sign of Taurus. Venus in Taurus serves to explain his taste for the finer things in life and his alleged $2-million-a-month compulsory-spending disorder.
Taurus is decadent AF with a more is more approach, a quality made manifest in Depp’s excessive approach to accessories. Further, it tracks that someone with this placement would buy their own night club as Depp did with L.A.’S Viper Room, as Taurus likes to party on their own turf.
There’s an inherent defiance to the Taurus archetype, they like what they like and want what they want and won’t be talked off the ledge, away from the wedding aisle sans prenup or out of spending $5 million dollars to shoot their dead friend’s ashes out of a cannon. In short, Venus in Taurus is the placement of the obstinate overspender.
Mars in Virgo

Mars, named for the chariot riding god of war is the planet of conflict and chemistry, sex and aggression. Depp’s Mars (conjunct Uranus which we’ll get to in a bit) is in the love as a project, people as potential sign of Virgo.
As Depp admitted to Rolling Stone, “I don’t think there ever was a way I thought about people, especially women, other than ‘I can fix them.’
”The Virgo desire to help and heal, when undermined or unappreciated can turn vindictive and volatile, especially with the unstable influence of Uranus.
Second Saturn return

During last years defamation trial and to THE EXACT DEGREE of Aquarius, Depp ushered in his second Saturn return.
For the uninitiated, Saturn is the dad jeans planet of rules, restrictions, karmic debts, hard knocks and serious reckoning.
Saturn’s orbit is roughly 29 years and we experience our first Saturn return on the wave crest of our 30s and it marks the point of fortification through challenge that inititates us into adulthood.
If we’re lucky enough we live to see Saturn come back around a few times in our lifetime as Depp did last year.
Depp has Saturn in Aquarius in his seventh house of partnership, legal issues and contracts. Thusly, his tough love lessons were dealt by the punisher planet in the form of his relationship with his Taurus ex Amber Heard and his reputation professional and personal, literally being put on trial. The stars don’t lie, folks.
Astrology 101: Your guide to the stars
Uranus conjunct Mars in the first house

Depp has Mars, the planet of action and aggression conjunct Uranus, the planet of upheaval in his first house of the self. Planets present in the first house are hyper present in the personality and presentation, suffice it to say, the same astrological energy that conspires to make Depp a formidable actor also makes him an unpredictable person.
Uranus is the only planet that rotates on its side and it has a propensity to likewise turn things sideways by way of sudden change in temperament or circumstance. In the first house this destabilizing quality is apparent and affecting to those in Depp’s orbit. The shaky nature of this conjunction is bolstered by Depp’s mercurial and malefic Gemini sun.
Neptune retrograde and wounds that won’t stop weeping

Depp has Neptune, planet of dreams and fantasy, retrograde in Scorpio the sign of sex, secrets and transformation through trauma suggesting his illusions of love take on the shape of a dark fairy tale where passions and tempers flare but love wins. It’s some real “Wuthering Heights” X Pam & Tommy s–t. For evidence see his history of commemorating his love in ink and then marring their meaning.
Add to the depths and the dark the relationship between Depp’s Neptune in Scorpio and his Chiron in Pisces. Within the birth chart the sign and placement of Chiron indicates the wound, or if you prefer, knot, we must suture or untie in order to fully actualize.
Chiron points to where it hurts, and if we listen, it exists to teach us how to overcome ourselves and empower others. If we do not address and dress this wound we perpetuate it in our partnerships, drawn back again and again to familiar trauma like a singed moth to a proverbial flame.

As fate would have it, Depp’s Neptune forms a strong trine with this pain point. As Astrohealer deftly notes of this aspect, “Chiron may become such an intrinsic part of our spiritual experience of life that we may feel redemption without pain is not quite satisfying.
We may yearn for a grand finale of some sort, dramatizing compassion for the wounds of the world, romancing pain, or celebrating the excruciating process of redemption.”
This yearning for a finale, preference for pain and need for compassion en masse serves to explain why Depp went after defamation charges in the first place and why he was willing to air a land fill of dirty laundry for the chance at public redemption.
As the mission of astrology and the human experience is to educate, integrate and evolve we hope that Depp’s experiences, favorable and fraught, will lead him to a place of betterment.
