Islanders’ Scott Mayfield shouts out Massapequa after Little League World Series berth

The Massapequa Little Leaguers have grabbed the attention of the Islanders.

After Massapequa Coast made it to the Little League World Series by no-hitting Toms River East in the Metro Region final, Islanders defenseman Scott Mayfield tweeted a message of support for the local side.

“Congrats to the Massapequa Coast Little League,” Mayfield wrote, “.. huge no-hitter from Joey Lionetti! Can’t wait to watch you guys kill it in Williamsport.”

Mayfield, 29, has been with the Islanders for the duration of his eight-year career.

Massapequa is the first team from Long Island to reach the Little League World Series since 1978, when Rockville Centre did so. It’s also the first ever LLWS berth for the town.

Lionetti struck out nine over six innings on Friday night without giving up a hit to propel his team to a decisive 4-0 win.
