Tim Allen and Richard Karn hosted a show within a show on Home Improvement called "Tool Time." The show presented uses for tools and humorously showed Allen unable to use tools properly.

Home Improvement ran from 1991-99 on ABC. It propelled Allen's career, who went on to star in the Santa Clause franchise and currently stars in the FOX comedy Last Man Standing. The show also launched the careers of teen heartthrob Jonathan Taylor Thomas and Pamela Anderson. Karn most recently had a recurring role on the Hulu show Pen15.

Allen told Collider doing Assembly Required gives him an opportunity to make fun of his old friend Karn. It also allowed them to shine a spotlight on people "who can solve a problem not by talking about it, but by 'doing' it with creativity and amazing building skills." Assembly Required will premiere on the History Channel on Feb. 23.
