Marcus Rashford scored and paid homage to his late friend.

Rashford, a star on England’s 2022 World Cup soccer team, scored two goals in the team’s 3-0 victory over Wales, their rival Great Britain squad, on Tuesday.

After his first score, he knelt down on the pitch, closed his eyes and pointed to the sky. Later on, he explained the tribute he was paying.

“Unfortunately I lost one of my friends a couple of days ago,” Rashford told reporters after the game. “He’s had quite a long battle with cancer so I’m pleased that I managed to score for him. He’s always been a big supporter of mine, he was just a great person that I’m pleased to have come into my life really.”

After the victory over Wales, tying the United States 0-0 and defeating Iran 6-2, England is advancing past the group stage to the round of 16. They play Senegal on Sunday afternoon.

Rashford answered a question about if this was the happiest moment of his career by turning it to the team’s championship ambitions.

“I think for me winning trophies has always been the happiest moment on the pitch for me, he said. “I feel like the ambition in the squad is really good. We have a good mix of qualities. We have a really good squad and a squad that is definitely capable of challenging to win the tournament. I’m hoping that we can build on this type of performance, keep improving and keep scoring goals and showing our qualities.”

Rashford has played professionally for Manchester United since 2015.
