Elon Musk Wants To Unban Donald Trump From Twitter, Users Divided On Decision

Tesla CEO Elon Musk, who is set to potentially own Twitter, said on Tuesday that if he becomes the company's CEO he will unban former president Donald Trump.

Musk said at FT Live’s Future of the Car conference that Twitter’s ban on Trump was “morally wrong and flat-out stupid.”

“Permanent bans should be extremely rare and really reserved for accounts that are bots, or scam, spam accounts… I do think it was not correct to ban Donald Trump. I think that was a mistake, because it alienated a large part of the country and did not ultimately result in Donald Trump not having a voice,” Musk added.

Musk said that he will clear the ban as long as his deal goes through and he officially becomes the new interim Twitter CEO.

“I would reverse the permanent ban. I don’t own Twitter yet. So, this is not like a thing that will definitely happen, because what if I don’t own Twitter?” Musk said.

Twitter permanently suspended Trump from the platform in January 2021 following the Jan. 6 Capitol Riot “due to the risk of further incitement of violence.”

In April, Trump said that he would not return to Twitter if Musk unbanned him because he will be focused on his own social media platform Truth Social.

Many Twitter users have responded in both negative and positive ways to the news, with some applauding Musk because other controversial accounts were still active on the site, while others warned it would be a bad idea considering the incendiary things Trump often said on his account.
