Dez Bryant, Mike Golic among critics of Jaguars’ Tim Tebow signing

The Jaguars’ Tim Tebow signing hasn’t been getting the best reviews from the football cognoscenti.

After new head coach Urban Meyer signed the failed quarterback-turned-minor league baseball player-turned-tight end to a one-year deal, former NFL receiver Dez Bryant took to Twitter to express his skepticism.

“So Tebow haven’t played an NFL game in damn near a decade and it’s that simple…no hate but you got to be kidding me,” Bryant tweeted.

Tebow hasn’t played a regular season snap since 2012, when he was still trying to be a quarterback. In that season with the Jets, he threw eight passes and ran for 102 yards. He spent time in training camp with the Patriots and Eagles, but never played another regular season game.

Now 33, Tebow is attempting a comeback at a position he has never played. It’d be a non-starter if not for the fact that Urban Meyer, Tebow’s former coach at Florida, is now the coach of the Jaguars. The two are reportedly now neighbors in the Jacksonville area.

Other than the questions about whether or not Tebow is qualified to play the position, the signing brings up other questions about Meyer’s leadership – which former NFLer and ESPN personality Mike Golic noted on Twitter.

“I honestly don’t understand the Tebow move at all, 8yrs out of ball, never played the position, can he block? Can he catch? Is this the way Urban is running the show……let’s not forget Urban’s ridiculous hire of the former Iowa strength coach, which lasted about a day,” Golic tweeted.

Golic is referring to Meyer hiring Chris Doyle, the former strength and conditioning coach who was accused of racist and abusive behavior at Iowa. His tenure with the Jaguars lasted one day after an uproar.

So far, it’s been a questionable start for a coach who has never worked in the NFL, on a franchise that has had one winning season in the past 13 years.
