Colts fans start petition begging Jim Irsay to not hire Jeff Saturday

If one segment of Colts fans have their way, Jeff Saturday will not be hired as the team’s next head coach.

The group — led by a person with the username Shawn Ward — started a petition on change.org titled, “Don’t hire Jeff Saturday as head coach.” It includes a picture of Saturday, with a caption of “not our head coach” printed across the center, and the petition has compiled over 2,700 signatures as of Thursday afternoon.

“We as Colts fans will always love the memories of the SB XLI team,” the petition, which is addressed to Indianapolis owner Jim Irsay, stated. “We love the former players and the people they’ve become, but we don’t want Jeff Saturday as the head coach of this team going forward.

“Please hire someone with experience and save your fan base from revolting and losing interest.”

The Colts have interviewed 13 candidates for their vacancy so far, according to The Athletic, with a list that stretches from Saturday and Giants defensive coordinator Wink Martindale to Rams defensive coordinator Raheem Morris and Eagles offensive coordinator Shane Steichen. But Jordan Schultz, an NFL insider at theScore, reported that Saturday remains Irsay’s top candidate — even though other members of the Colts’ front office disagree.

“Saturday, I’m told, presented his staff choices during his 2nd interview on Wednesday,” Schultz tweeted. “Irsay has not sat in on most interviews.”

The Colts are entering a pivotal offseason after a 4-12-1 season that featured a midseason firing of Frank Reich — who landed with the Panthers on Thursday as their new head coach — and stunning pivot to Saturday, who didn’t have any professional coaching experience and was working as a television analyst at ESPN. They don’t have a long-term answer at quarterback and have shuffled veterans Philip Rivers, Carson Wentz and Matt Ryan at quarterback the last three seasons.

Indianapolis holds the No. 4 pick in April’s draft, and it could use the first round as an opportunity to add to an offense that features star running back Jonathan Taylor.

Some Colts fans, though, hope it’ll be a coach other than Saturday contributing to team’s draft plans and philosophies moving forward.
