Cheyenne Woods might be at her best when she’s “angry.”
Tiger Woods’ niece qualified for next month’s US Open on Monday by medaling in the qualifier played in Spring Lake, NJ. And she credits her biggest mistake of the day for the turnaround.
Woods took a two shot penalty on the seventh hole for accidentally hitting her playing partner’s ball. According to reports, Woods thought her blind second shot had ended up in the rough next to the bunker, and that was seemingly confirmed when her playing partner indicated that her own ball was on the green. After chipping onto the green, Woods realized she had hit the wrong Titleist and incurred a two-stroke penalty.
“Honestly, I feel like the penalty really dialed in my focus and got me a little angry, where I just wanted to just play my way in,” Woods said, according to GolfWeek.
Woods rolled from there, starting with birdies on the next two holes. Woods then pulled away from there by shooting a 3-under 69 on the second 18 of the day to cruse to a five-stroke victory.
“With my conditional status on the LPGA,” said the 30-year-old Woods, who last played in the US Open in 2018, “I don’t really have many opportunities to play. I’m very grateful for the ones I get.”
The US Women’s Open will be held at The Olympic Club in San Francisco. It will be her fifth time competing in the major, thought she has yet to make the cut.
