The Twitter and YouTube accounts of the British Army were hacked and used for the promotion of cryptocurrencies and non-fungible tokens (NFTs) Sunday. However, the army was able to regain access to its accounts later in the day.
"Apologies for the temporary interruption to our feed. We will conduct a full investigation and learn from this incident. Thanks for following us and normal service will now resume," the British Army said via a Twitter post.
The Press Office of the Ministry of Defence also commented on the ongoing investigation.
The Twitter account was renamed "Ark Invest" and was used to post tweets about several cryptocurrencies and NFTs. However, the British Army regained control and restored the account to its normal state.
Ark Invest is a global investment firm headed by Cathy Woods. There was no official response from the firm.
Interestingly, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Twitter account was also hacked in a similar manner last year and used to promote fake giveaway links.
