Brewers determined not to repeat Josh Hader trade deadline disaster

The Brewers will not sell this trading season, according to a well-placed source. Things can change, but the Brewers, who’ve managed to hold onto first place despite many key injuries, are determined not to repeat a situation like last year — when fans and clubhouse reacted with horror at the deadline trade of beloved lockdown closer Josh Hader. That deal triggered a slump, causing them to fall out of first and miss the playoffs by one game.

So that means coveted right-hander Corbin Burnes isn’t going anywhere.

One interesting trade candidate: Cubs star Marcus Stroman, who has a year to go at $21 million but an opt-out he’s likely to exercise after 2024. While Stroman has been superb, it’s hard to see either of his former teams — the Blue Jays or Mets — bringing him back. The exits were rough, but of course the pitching market for star starters looks like it might be especially thin.

Dylan Cease remains a long shot to go, but Lucas Giolito, a free agent to be, and longtime Chisox Tim Anderson are among likely White Sox trade candidates if they sell. Anderson could be a fit for the Dodgers.

An Angels person again said Shohei Ohtani “isn’t going anywhere” at the deadline. The one caveat is that they may have to re-evaluate if they fall way out of it (but even then, Angels owner Arte Moreno wants to make Ohtani a lifetime Angel, thus trading him wouldn’t work).

One scout said Ohtani hasn’t been quite as good overall this year, but noted, “He’s still the best.”

Possibly, but Aaron Judge is once again the leading MVP candidate.

Isiah Kiner-Falefa looks like a born utilityman. He’s been excellent in center field, left and on the infield, and he said he could catch if absolutely necessary.

Domingo German said he was told the next sticky-stuff ban would be 50 games, but if he heard right, perhaps someone was trying to scare him. There’s actually no set number of games for a second violation. …

Braves star Max Fried (elbow) is throwing but will take at least a month to return. Meantime the Braves hope Kyle Wright (shoulder) could be back sometime in the second half. His situation is more worrisome because it’s the shoulder, and because he experienced similar symptoms in winter.
