Former President Donald Trump still has the support of more than 30% of Americans despite there being several investigations into the business mogul.
In a new poll from NBC News/Hart Research Associates/Public Opinion Strategies, at least 36% of Americans said they still think very positively or somewhat positively of Trump more than a year after he left the White House. The numbers remained the same from the results of March’s survey but have fallen by 2% from October 2021.
Despite receiving 36% of support from the poll’s participants, 33% of Republican primary voters believe Trump had been a good president but called for new leaders. In addition, 10% of GOP primary voters said they believe Trump had not been an effective president and called for Republicans to move on to other candidates.
Overall, the poll found that only 55% of Republican voters believe the party should still be led by Trump moving forward, while 43% said they want their party to either nominate a new leader or move on from Trump.
Furthermore, 58% of voters said they supported the GOP party first, while only 34% said they were more supportive of Trump than their political party.
The survey was conducted from May 5 to 7 and May 9 to 10. The poll surveyed 1,000 adult participants.
The results from the survey appeared to contradict a CBS News polling in February where 69% or nearly seven in 10 Republicans said Trump should run for president again in 2024, with only 31% saying otherwise.
It remains unclear whether Trump will decide to seek another term at the White House in 2024. While he has hosted several rallies since leaving the Oval Office, he has stopped short of making a formal announcement of his plans for the national election. Trump added that he will likely reveal his plans after the 2022 midterm elections have concluded.
Trump is currently the subject of several investigations, including the House Select Committee’s probe into the events leading up to the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol by MAGA supporters as well as the FBI’s investigation into unauthorized retention or destruction of classified White House documents.
