3-Month-Old Infant Found Next To Mother's Decaying Body Was Alone For Days: Cops

A 3-month-old infant in Wisconsin who was found alive next to his mother's body at a residence in Milwaukee on Thursday had been alone for days, police said.

After the neighbors complained of a foul smell filling their hallways, deputies reached the apartment at around 8 a.m. Thursday. The police found the infant lying next to his mother's body. The family identified the victim as 19-year-old Audrey Davis, WISIN reported.

The infant was rushed to a hospital and the police sent the body of the deceased mother for an autopsy. The police consider Davis' death as suspicious and have started an investigation. The officials did not reveal further details about the probe.

The cops said the child was uninjured and had been checked at Children's Wisconsin, a hospital in Milwaukee. The boy will continue to receive care at the center for few more days and will then be released into the care of his family members.

The neighbors grew suspicious after the foul smell that had been emanating from the flat almost a week prior had started to get worse.

"I live across the hall from her. Our apartments almost face each other, and so we were smelling a funny smell, so we all were getting on edge," said Vera Cowley, the neighbor who called the police, according to WTMJ 4. "That is death. I know what death smells like," Cowley added.

Another neighbor told WISN 12 that they had suspicions after they did not hear from the victim for a long time. "She [the victim] went in the house, but never came back out. I'm like, 'Something is wrong, I ain't seen Audrey, heard from Audrey. Something is not right," the neighbor said.

Earlier this month, a 1-year-old baby was found alive with three dead bodies inside a motel in North Carolina. After a preliminary investigation, the police believe that the three adults died in an apparent drug overdose. The bodies were sent for an autopsy and the child was taken to a hospital. The police said that the child was uninjured. However, the investigators did not reveal the exact relationship between the child and the deceased.
