13 Fully Vaccinated Connecticut Residents Die Of COVID-19 In Past Week

More than 10 residents in Connecticut have died of COVID-19 over a week despite being fully vaccinated for the virus, data from the state's Department of Health showed. 

Officials for the Connecticut Department of Public Health have recorded 13 breakthrough COVID-19 deaths over the past week, bringing the state’s total number of coronavirus-related deaths among the fully vaccinated to 83. 

The deaths represent 8.2% of all COVID-19 deaths in the state since Feb. 9, according to data published on Sept. 16. 

Of the 83 fully vaccinated people who died of the novel coronavirus, 66 were in people aged 75 and older; 6 were in people aged 65 to 74; 8 were in people aged 55 to 64; 2 were in people aged 45 to 54; and 1 occurred in a resident aged 35 to 44. The state has yet to report COVID-19 deaths in fully vaccinated residents aged 34 and below.


Statewide, officials have reported 8,447 COVID-19 deaths involving unvaccinated and vaccinated residents, including 31 deaths last week. 

Connecticut has also recorded 779 new coronavirus cases among the fully vaccinated, which represents 29.7% of all cases reported during the same time period. In comparison, there were 1,848 COVID-19 cases among the unvaccinated. The new figures bring the state’s total number of confirmed COVID-19 infections to 347,255.

On Thursday, Connecticut officials also reported a total of 877 COVID-19 cases among students and staff during the first weeks of school -- 751 of whom were students in grades K-12. At least 87% of the cases also occurred in students who were unvaccinated or are not yet eligible to receive a vaccine shot, according to CT Insider.

The state also reported 126 COVID-19 cases among school teachers and staff members. At least 22% were unvaccinated. 

The 877 COVID-19 cases were spread among hundreds of schools in the state. At least six schools recorded more than a half-dozen cases, such as Manchester High School which reported 12 COVID-19 cases. 

The rise in cases come as officials on Friday reported a daily positivity rate of 4.22% in 36,572 COVID-19 tests, which resulted in 1,544 positive tests. On Thursday, the positivity rate was only at 2.95% for 36,180 COVID-19 tests, according to WSFB.
