Animal Well game crashing on Steam Deck: How to fix it

It took a long time, but Animal Well is finally here to enjoy. The game was in development for nearly seven years, and the end product is truly awe-inspiring. There’s nothing but an endless amount of praise from critics and fans for it, essentially making publisher Bigmode’s first venture a big success. Besides PC, Nintendo Switch, and PlayStation 5, fans are also playing the game on their Steam Decks. Unfortunately, there’s this crashing issue that’s not allowing fans to enjoy the game to its fullest. If you too are encountering the same, here’s everything you need to know about fixing this issue.

Animal Well is a Verified title for the Steam Deck. As such, it runs amazingly well when there are no issues plaguing it. Sadly, that isn’t the case for some players due to this crashing issue. So, is there a fix for it? Well, let’s go ahead and find out.

Here are some workarounds you can use to deal with this crashing issue. Try not to skip, unless you’ve already used one before.

Restart –

Before you try out other workarounds, we highly recommend using the restart method. You can start with restarting the game. If that doesn’t work, do what this player did. Essentially, you need to restart the Deck and then download any updates available for the SteamOS. If there’s an update available for the game itself, download and install that too.

Repair the game files –

Sometimes issues such as this are simply due to missing or corrupted game files. In such cases, the only fix is to verify and repair those files. And for that, what you need to do is select Animal Well from your Library and press the Options button. Next, select Properties, switch to Installed Files, and click on Verify integrity of game files.

Use Proton.

Players can also try forcing Proton to run the game. This is a pretty common fix for dealing with crashing issues like this one, so give it a try. To use Proton, you need to go into the game’s Properties settings menu and then switch to Compatibility. Next, check the Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool checkbox. Once that’s done, select a Proton version from the drop-down menu. You can start with Proton Experimental and then use another one if it doesn’t fix the issue.

Switch to Desktop Mode –

If you are having issues running Animal Well in Gaming Mode, then we suggest that you switch to Desktop Mode and play the game. In order to switch to Desktop Mode, you will need to press the Steam button on your Deck and then select Settings. Next, scroll all the way down to Power and click on Switch to Desktop Mode option.

Reinstall –

If somehow none of the aforementioned workarounds are of help, then we suggest reinstalling the game itself. This time, consider installing the game on the Deck’s internal storage, rather than an external one. Do that and hopefully, the issue won’t be there anymore. However, if it’s still there, then we suggest joining the official Discord server and asking for help there.
